Fake & Feints (1v1 Moves) | |
After establishing a comfort level with contacting the ball with all parts of both feet, soccer players may be introduced to 1v1 moves, also known as fakes and feints. Some may call it breaking anckles or tricks, etc. This is when the player with the ball engages a defender, 1 v 1, to entice the defender to go one way so the dribbler can go the other way. It involves touch, speed, control, finesse, and lots of hard work on the part of the dribbler to be effective. There are four objectives when trying to beat a defender with the ball:
No matter what your objective is, ball control is everything. When trying dribbling moves, players must be equally capable of using both feet and be able to change direction and pace. Usually to complete a dribbling move, the player with the ball must first fake with his/her body or the ball to get the defender to shift his/her weight or take a step in the direction of the fake. This is to create an unbalance situation in the defender. The dribbler must be very creative with the fake and really “sell it,” making the defender “buy it” believe that the dribbler is going to go in a particular direction and react accordingly. The instant that this is achieved, the dribbler must immediately contact the ball and accelerate (change pace) to the unbalanced side of the defender. |
